Tips For Handling Your Kids’ Sweet Tooth

If it were up to me, my kids would never eat sweets. I would make sure everything they eat is highly nutritious and packed with vitamins and minerals. In my ideal world, my kids would never eat junk.

But we’re not living in an ideal world. Compromise is a big part of life. Teaching kids to consume sweets in moderation is important, because learning to handle the temptation of junk food is an important skill in our wealthy, well-fed, junk-food-prone society.

My own kids are allowed to choose a small candy each night after dinner. It works: they learn that a small amount of a concentrated sweet taste is all they need. We also try to be good role models: when we order a small scoop of ice cream or share dessert, we teach them by example how to consume sweets sensibly.
