School Children In U.S. Need More Play Time

According to new research, a growing trend of limiting free time in elementary school is unhealthy for kids. Kids need exercise, an opportunity to socialize and to burn off excess energy.

Many school districts responded to the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 by reducing recess time, art lessons and physical education in an effort to focus on reading and mathematics. But according to the study, children who get a 15-minute break during the school day behave better and are more focused in the classroom than those who don’t. It’s also interesting to note that most elementary schools in Asia provide a 10-minute break after every 40 to 50 minutes of instruction.

Incorporating play time into the school day is important for young children.  It promotes learning, social development, and better health.

Another compelling reason to allow kids breaks during the school day is the growing problem of childhood obesity, which needs to be addressed by more activity, especially at school where children spend a significant part of their day.

The researchers also found that children not getting recess were more likely to be black, from poor families and attending public schools in large cities. Since the same kids often live in unsafe neighborhoods and can’t roam the streets in the afternoons, recess is the only opportunity for them to practice their social skills and get some exercise.
